Pressure Washer Trailer Setup — How to Build a Rig That Actually Makes Money

Start With the Work, Not the Machine
Most guys plan a pressure washer trailer setup backwards. They pick a pump, bolt it to a trailer, then go looking for work the rig can handle. That’s how you end up with a 4 GPM machine bidding flatwork you’ll never finish on time.
Do it the other way. Name the three jobs you intend to bill every week — dumpster pads, fleet yards, roofs, parking garages, whatever they are. Every spec below falls out of that answer. - Flatwork and pads — you’re buying GPM and a surface cleaner, not pressure.
- Grease, fleet, and kitchen work — you’re buying a hot water coil, full stop.
- Roofs, siding, and painted surfaces — you’re buying a soft wash system, and pressure is the enemy.
- Remote or municipal sites — you’re buying tank capacity before anything else.
The Five Decisions That Define Your Setup
Everything else on a pressure washing trailer setup is trim. These five determine what you can bid.
- Flow (GPM) — how fast you clean. On open concrete, GPM is the whole game. 4 GPM is a driveway machine. 5.6 to 8 GPM is a commercial machine.
- Heat — hot or cold. A coil roughly doubles the work you’re allowed to bid, because grease contracts are closed to cold-water operators.
- Power source — gas for most operators, diesel for high duty cycle, electric or natural gas for indoor and fixed-site work.
- Water on board — how long you run before you’re hunting a spigot.
- Chemical delivery — downstream injection for general work, a dedicated soft wash system if roofs and siding are in the plan.

Water Supply — The Ceiling Nobody Calculates
Here’s the math almost nobody runs before buying. A standard garden hose delivers roughly 5 GPM on a good day, and plenty of commercial sites deliver less. Hang an 8 GPM pump off that spigot and you’ll starve it — cavitation, heat, and a pump that dies years early.
So your buffer tank isn’t an accessory. It’s the part that lets the machine hit its rating at all. Size it against runtime:
- 200–325 gallon — buffer for sites that reliably have water. Keeps the pump fed between fill cycles.
- 525 gallon — the practical commercial default. At 6.5 GPM that’s roughly 80 minutes of continuous trigger time with no hookup at all.
- 1,000+ gallon — fleet yards, municipal contracts, and any site where “is there water?” is answered with a shrug.
Two things operators forget. First, weight: water runs about 8.34 lbs per gallon, so a full 525-gallon tank adds roughly 4,400 lbs before you count the trailer, engine, and reels. Spec the axle for the full tank, not the empty one. Plumbing and Layout — Where Rigs Go Wrong
A good spec sheet and a bad layout still make a bad rig. What separates a machine built by a manufacturer from one assembled in somebody’s shop:
- Hose reel placement — reels mounted where you can pull and rewind without walking the trailer. Sounds trivial. It’s ten minutes a job, every job.
- Bypass and unloader setup — the bypass valve routes water back when the trigger’s closed. Set up wrong, it recirculates and cooks the pump on long jobs.
- Coil protection — the hot water coil is the most expensive thing on the trailer to freeze. Schedule 80 coil, drained properly, or you replace it.
- Weight distribution — tank forward of the axle, engine balanced. A tail-heavy rig sways at highway speed with 4,000 lbs of water behind you.

Look at the middle column. That’s the configuration most of our commercial customers land on, and it’s not an accident — 6.5 GPM with heat and a 525-gallon tank is the smallest rig that can bid the full range of commercial work without an excuse. Realistically, 5.6 GPM, 3,500+ PSI, hot water, and a 325-gallon minimum tank. Below that you can do the work, but you’ll bid jobs you finish too slowly to profit on, and grease contracts stay closed to you without heat.
Do I need a water tank if job sites have a spigot?
Yes. A spigot delivers around 5 GPM at best, and commercial sites are frequently worse. The tank buffers supply so the pump runs at its rating instead of starving. On any machine over 5 GPM, running straight off a hose is how pumps die early.
Can I add hot water to a cold water trailer later?
Sometimes, but it’s rarely worth it. The coil, burner, fuel tank, and the plumbing to support them all have to fit a frame that wasn’t laid out for them. Spec heat at build time — it’s dramatically cheaper than a retrofit, and we build every unit to order anyway.
